Prof SOMADITYA SEN : Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Department of Physics; Material Science and Engg.; Astronomy

Somaditya Sen is an Associate Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. Basically a physicist he is known best as a material scientist with seventeen years of experience in synthesis and characterization of chemically engineered functional solid materials in different forms, i.e. nanostructures, powders and single crystals. Introducing magnetism in non-magnetic materials, especially ferroelectric materials or semi-conductors is one of his favorite objectives in research. Fabrication of devices based on these materials is also an interest. Investigation of structure related functional properties of materials is a strength. He completed his doctoral work at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. Internationally he carried out his research at places like National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan; University of Electro-communications, Tokyo, Japan and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, USA. While in Japan and USA he was a frequent user of national research facilities, like Satellite Venture Business Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Synchrotron Radiation Centre, etc.

Dr RINI E G : DST WOMAN SCIENTIST, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Material Science and Engg.

E. G. Rini is a DST Woman Scientist working in the group of Somaditya Sen, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. She obtained her Ph.D. Degree from Barkatullah University, Bhopal in Physics in 2007 on Lattice Dynamics of Complex Material (RMnO3) Manganites (R=La, Pr, Nd). She received MP Young Scientist Award in Physics in 2003 and also Senior Research Fellow award in 2004 by CSIR, New Delhi. She has undergone training on lattice dynamics in materials at Solid State Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (B.A.R.C), Mumbai under the guidance of Dr. S.L. Chaplot. Amongst her notable publications are one journal publication in Physical Review B and one book chapter in Phonons in Condensed Material published by Allied Publications. She has developed her own computer simulation program to calculate lattice sum of systems having cubic, tetragonal and orthorhombic structures. She worked in Government Holkar Science College, Indore as guest assistant professor for 4 years. She also got the Best Paper Award in the National Conference in Emerging Trends in Physical and Chemical Sciences held at Govt. Holkar Science College, Indore on March 2014. Objectives of her research work include determination of thermal, elastic, mechanical and dynamical properties of functional materials using first principal calculations based on Density Functional Theory and synthesis and characterization of single phase multiferroic materials.

ARUN KUMAR YADAV : PhD Research Fellow, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Material Science and Engg.

Arun Kumar Yadav is a Ph.D student in Material Science and Engineering Center of Indian Institute of Technology Indore under the supervision of Dr. Somaditya Sen. He completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from United College of Engineering & Research in 2012 and M.Tech in Material Science & Technology from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal in 2014. He worked on “Synthesis and characterization of Al-Si-Fe3C as a Metal Matrix Composite” as his M.Tech project. Currently he is working on nanomaterials, magnetism in semiconductor materials and multiferroic materials.

TULIKA SRIVASTAVA : PhD Research Fellow, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Material Science and Engg.

Tulika Srivastava is a PhD student in Material Science & Engineering Centre at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. Her research interest includes synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and fabrication of electronics devices based on semiconducting materials. She completed her BTech in Electrical Engineering at Inderprastha Engineeering college, Ghaziabad in 2012. Her M Tech (Energy Engineering) was completed in 2014 at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology. Her MTech project was on fabrication and experimentation of dye-sensitized solar cell in which she prepared ZnO based solar cell with different natural dyes extracted from flowers like marygold, henna, etc.. She joined IIT Indore in July, 2014.

NASIMA KHATUN : PhD Research Fellow, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Department of Physics

Ms Nasima Khatun is a PhD student in the department of Physics at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. She is working under Associate Prof Dr. Somaditya Sen. Her research interests include synthesis, characterization and investigating the properties (electrical, optical, magnetic ...etc) of semiconductor,multiferroic,composite oxide in the form of powder and thin film for device application. She completed her B.Sc in Physics Honors at Panskura Banamali College under Vidyasagar University, Midnapore. Her M.Sc in Physics was completed at Central University G.G.U (C.G). Her specialization in M.Sc. was Materials science. During M.Sc. she completed a project on Synthesis and characterization of Strontium Stannate (SrSnO3) which has perovskite structure by co-precipitation method. Dielectric behavior at different temperature and density measurement was studied in this project. She joined IIT Indore in Juley 2014 and now working on Nano-materials which is applicable in environmental purification.

Md. NASIR KHAN : PhD Research Fellow, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Department of Physics

Mohammad Nasir Khan is a Ph.D student in Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Indore. He earned his M.Tech (Nanotechnology), M.Sc (Physics) and B.Sc (Physics) from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. His areas of research interests include the synthesis, characterization and investigating the properties of Dilute-Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS) of different forms i.e. powders, rods and nanostructures for device applications. He is also interested in Multiferroics and Spintronics. Khan completed his M.Tech project on "Synthesis and Characterization of Sodium Alginate/Fe2O3 Nanocomposite" under guidance of Dr. SSZ Ashraf, Assistant Professor, AMU Aligarh. Currently, he is working on TM-doped CuO Semiconductors. He is also operating instruments like XRD, UV-Vis Spectrometer, Raman Spectrometer etc in SMART Lab. He is the in-charge of Raman Spectrometer.

Mr. Gaurav Bajpai is a PhD student in Material Science & Engineering Centre at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. He is working under Associate Professor Dr. Somaditya Sen. His research area is synthesis and characterization of Nanomaterials and Mechanical properties of semiconductor ceramics. He has completed his B.Tech from Mechanical Engineering Department in University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kanpur. He has completed his master degree from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal. He has joined IIT Indore in July, 2013.

Mr. Saurabh Tiwari is a PhD student in Material Science and Engineering Centre at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. He is working under Associate Professor Dr. Somaditya Sen. His research area is synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and single crystals . He has completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from MANIT-Bhopal and M.Tech in Material Science and Engineering from MANIT-Bhopal. He also worked as Senior Project assistant in CSIR (AMPRI)-Bhopal under Dr. S. Anita completed B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engg. from University Institute of Engineering & Technology, PANJAB University Chandigarh. She later did her M.Tech in Optical Engg. from Applied Physics Department, Guru Jambheshwar University & Science & Technology, Hisar and joined her M.Tech project at RRCAT,Indore on "Designing a soft x-ray spectrometer for reflectivity beamline(BL-3) at the INDUS2. She has expertise on several softwares including Labview. She will be working on Titania related materials.

SANIYA AYAZ : PhD Research Fellow, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Centre of Astronomy

Saniya Ayaz is a Doctoral Student of Dr.Somaditya Sen. She obtained her M.Tech (Nanotechnology) and B.Tech (Electronics & Communication Engineering) from Rajiv Gandhi Technical University, Bhopal. She was awarded with the University Gold medal for her outstanding performance in the M. Tech programme. During her M. Tech programme she completed the minor & major project work in UGC DAE CSR Indore, on “Basic Studies on Nanocrystalline Cadmium Sulphide (CdS) and its Photoconductive Properties”, under the supervision of Dr. V. Ganesan (Center Director - UGC DAE CSR Indore). She also presented a Paper entitled “Photoconductive Properties of Nano-Dots of Cadmium Sulfide” in the National Conference on “Emerging Trends in Engineering & Science for sustainable development” Organized by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, during June 05-06, 2012. She has worked as a Junior Research Fellow in the DST project entitled “New Thermoelectric Materials Design based on Early Transition Metal Compounds” at Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Indore under the supervision of Dr. Preeti. A. Bhobe. Ruhul Amin is a Doctoral Student of Dr.Somaditya Sen. He obtained his M.Sc (Physics) and B.Sc (Physics) from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. During his masters course work he did a project on "Synthesis and characterization of pure and Fe-doped ZnO nanoparticles". His interest is on multiferroics and perovskites. He has been selected for the DST Inspire fellowship to pursue Ph.D. He is presently working on Substituted NiO and related materials.

PRASHANT MISHRA : PhD Research Fellow, Indian Institute of Technology Indore; Discipline of Physics

Prashant Kumar Mishra is a Ph.D Student in the department of Physics at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. Prashant is a Doctoral Student of Dr.Somaditya Sen. He obtained his M.Sc (Physics) from Gurukul Kangri univresity (Haridwar,UK) and B.Sc (Physics Honors) from Delhi University.He was awarded with the University Gold medal for his outstanding performance in the M.Sc. During his masters course work he did a project on "Photoresponsivity of ZnO n/si hetrostructure nano particles". His interest is on Semiconductor and Sensing Properties of Materials. GAUTHAM KUMAR BHAT : M.Tech. student, Ming Chi University, Taipei, Taiwan

Gautham Kumar Bhat is am currently pursuing MTech in Electronics at Ming Chi University, Taipei, Taiwan. He has completed his Masters Degree in Physics from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, Department of Physics. During his Masters he joined the group as an intern and continued his research in this group for more than 1.5 years and got selected for MTech. He was emotionally attached towards Experimental Physics and had conducted projects in Physics with a strong passion. He felt to curve his life in abiding by the laws of Physics. The question blogged his mind "What Physics is all about?" and he felt a strong affinity towards experimental Physics. He drove himself to listening and noting down notes from NPTEL lecture videos and solving problems not only from his college but from online downloadable problems from abroad universities. However, due to lack of experimental research groups in Mangalore, his teachers strongly recommended him to take up internship projects in IITs after completion of his masters degree. When he applied to Dr Somaditya Sen he was a novice in experimental sciences but soon caught up and got himself at par a skilled research scholar. Today he is an integral part of the SMART research group and is supporting collaborative research between SMART group and Ming Chi University.

Kiran worked as an intern student in the group. He did his M.Tech (Nano Technology) from SRM University, Chennai and is now pursuing one more MTech in Electronics at Ming Chi University, Taipei, Taiwan. He is working on Zinc-doped Titanium dioxide (Ti1-xZnxO2) and perovskite ZnTiO3 Nano particles for Photovoltaic and electronic application. His research work includes device fabrication for electronic application.

SHIKHA SAKALLEY: M.Tech. student, Ming Chi University, Taipei, Taiwan

Shikha Sakalley completed her Bachelor of Engineering in the field of Electronics and Communication from Chameli Devi Group of Institutions, Indore and now going to pursue MS in the Dept of Materials Engineering at Ming Chi University of Technology, Taiwan. During her BE final year she joined the "Smart Lab" and worked as a Research Intern in the field of Metallurgical Engineering and Material Sciences (MEMS) under the supervision of Dr. Somaditya Sen on semiconductor materials at Indian Institute of Technology Indore. She did experimental study of the Si and Sn co-substituted TiO2; anatase to rutile phase transformation temperature by the XRD analysis of samples heated at various temperatures; and comparison of optical properties of these two phases by Uv-vis spectroscopy. She has also dide Raman analysis of these samples and calculated the crystalline size by using software CMPR and lattice parameter from GSAS software.
