He was born in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. After schooling, he received his B.Sc. degree with honors in chemistry from Vidyasagar University, Midnapore College, and M.Sc. degree in organic chemistry from Kalyani University in 1999. In the same year, he began his doctoral research in the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Jadavpur, Kolkata, under the supervision of Prof. Brindaban C. Ranu. He was awarded his Ph.D. degree from Jadavpur University in 2004 based on his work on indium-mediated synthetic transformations. Following this, he pursued postdoctoral training in the research groups of Prof. V. Prakash Reddy at the University of Missouri Rolla, USA, and Prof. Cong-Gui Zhao at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. He then served as a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at the Tokyo University of Science, Japan, under the guidance of Prof. Yujiro Hayashi from June 2007 to May 2009. Upon returning to India, he worked as a Senior Research Scientist at New Drug Discovery Research Centre, Medicinal Chemistry, Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited and Daiichi Sankyo Research Centre in India, Medicinal Chemistry Gurgaon, from June 2009 to October 2010. In October 2010, he joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at IIT Indore. His primary research interests include organocatalytic-mediated asymmetric synthesis, total synthesis of highly biologically active compounds, metal-mediated synthetic transformations, and green chemistry.
