Dr. Vimal has mix of academic and industrial experience both in India and the UK. He completed Ph.D. from Institute for Digital Communications at The University of Edinburgh (UoE), UK in 2005 fully funded by UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and The University of Edinburgh. During Ph.D. he also received IEE fellowship for collaborative research on OFDM with Prof. Falconer at Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. His research interests are in the broader areas of wireless communications, non-Gaussian non-parametric signal processing with applications to telecommunications and in software product development. He is currently PI/co-PI for externally funded projects of approx Rs. 15-Crores/2-Crores (USD 2.5 million) with major funding from Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Department of Science and Technology, UKIERI, MHRD and Academy of Finland. He is a reviewer for IEEE, Elsevier, and IET. He is currently Senior Member of IEEE and certified SCRUM Master. He is also General Co-Chair for IEEE ANTS 2018, and General Vice-Chair for IEEE ANTS 2017. He is also faculty convenor for Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Associate Dean Research and Development. He is also working on pan-IIT 5G Test Bed development

Work Experience

Dr. Vimal Bhatia has over 12 years of industrial experience. Prior to joining IIT-I, Vimal has been working on 4G data networks. From March 2008 till June 2011, he has been working in the UK on video transcoding for file based digital broadcasting for clients including HBO, Sony Pictures, SWR, Accenture, Prime Focus, Warner Brothers. From Sept 2007 till March 2008, he has been working with AudioSoft, UK on voice analytics for the UK and International Defence and Law Enforcement Agencies. During Jan 2006 – August 2007, he has been working with Digital Theater Systems, UK on multichannel audio processing for home and in-car entertainment system for customers worldwide (including Playstations and Blue-ray disks). He has worked on speech and channel coding at Hughes Software Systems, Gurgaon from Jan 2001 till Oct 2002. From Sept 1996 till August 1999 he has worked with C-DOT, Delhi on SDH standard and various test and measurement instruments for communication industry.

Research Group

The Signals and Software Group (SaSg) at IIT Indore is involved in cutting edge research and development in areas of wireless communication including communication channel estimation, equalization, and performance measurements of communication systems in high interference environment. The algorithms and techniques developed are applicable for SISO, MIMO, and various modulation techniques like OFDM, CDMA and others. The group has National Instruments USRPs, Ettus B210, FPGA kits, LabView and SystemVue Software. The group is also involved in general software based applications and product development. The group has interests in audio and video signal processing for improvement of QoS, Perception, Analytics, Surveillance and efficient implementations.
The group is also working closely with various organizations including Defence establishment like Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, and commercial establishments.

These are short 2-3 months internships for under-grads. If you are interested then send a email with subject “Summer Internship:(duration):(interest) or (prev. experience)”
These are at least 1-year long projects. If you are an under-grad student and can commit for atleast one year full-time (can be six-nine months full time and remaining with course work) project work, then you can contact me. These are typically 1-2 years projects. If you graduated from one of the top colleges in India or abroad or are simply bored with your current job and/or would like to build up a CV for applying abroad for higher studies, then you are welcome to apply. This requires longer commitment for at least a year to two. Since this is a full-time, you will be compensated based on qualifications and experience.
